Mighty Fictions
03:38
|
|||
We were standing on the rubble of civilization
We were in love and we were finally alone.
She said, "Let's start a garden so we can feed ourselves."
And I said, "But you don't know anything about that."
She said, "I saw it on a TV show. You put these in the ground."
And I worried that we'd end up having to share it
with them.
We were standing on the rubble of gentrification.
We were trying to get our over stuffed sofa up the steps.
It was the first time I ever felt like a voyeur.
It was the first time I ever felt like a grown up.
And we didn't want to go out, cuz it's a dangerous neighborhood.
And you know I'm not just saying that cuz I'm racist.
Strange,
how all of our mighty fictions
deceive us
bellowing:
"You are the very last ones still left."
We were leaving the part on the 15th street.
We were joining the crowd, waiting for the light to change.
It was the first time I caught a glimpse of your face.
It was the first time that I lost sight of your face.
And I felt the eyes upon me.
I did not know where I was.
And I wandered and I wandered and I wandered....
Strange,
how all of our mighty fictions
deceive us
bellowing:
"You are the very last ones still left."

Jumbo Slice
03:37
|
|||
Well, I've got friends in a million places,
And they're coming here just as soon as I ask them,
And we'll get a Jumbo Slice and stay up till we're too hoarse to speak.
And out on the street, all the staffers and hipsters,
Comparing the size of their big long resumes, and
How many quotes, do you think she wants to hear.
What time is it there? Then when you land,
It'll still be early, we can bike down to the bar,
They've got great ale on tap this year,
Or if you are tired, then we'll cook Lamb Shoulder,
and Greens,
And we'll talk and talk and talk, and talk and talk and talk...
A Mitt Romney sweatshirt explained to me sweetly
The difference between toasted sesame oil
and sesame oil is that one is for frying and the other's not
Is this what the revolution has come to?
Is this our 4AM manifesto?
I need you around to keep me honest or I'll end up just like him.
What time is it there? Then when you land,
It'll still be early, we can bike down to the bar,
They've got great ale on tap this year,
Or if you are tired, then we'll cook Lamb Shoulder,
and Greens,
And we'll talk and talk and talk, and talk and talk and talk...

2/3 Creatures
03:19
|
|||
Everyone lives too far.
There's ten dollars in my pocket
Two for the El-train fare
And three for my supper
That leaves five.
That's not quite enough if I'm going to survive.
She in her chauffeured car
pull on up to the sidewalk.
She says her father's stern
but at heart a good fellow.
And then there's the bequest.
Always the bequest...
I said I'm not sure if I'm one of you creatures
And she said "It's not all that bad,"
But I'm standing
alone on the precipice
with you.
Somebody makes a joke
when I show them the diamond.
No, it's not cause of that
it's not cause of her money.
But how can you tell?
How can you tell?
Two out of three creatures agree with you baby.
But what of the other third?
They've got reasons.
Alone on the precipice
Nothing's as pure as all that
Except this maybe:
Carbon and hydrogen
Carbon and hydrogen
are we.

The Sinking of Lake Anne
03:39
|
|||
All at once the river flowed into the precipice
And so began the sinking of the town into the earth
And all the kids were lying at the bottom of the lake
All free for the take.
Free for the take.
All the kids scooped the fish into their bikes
To ride them home and fry them up with onions
All the grown ups screeched about the lake mud in the house
And refused to eat.
Refused to eat.
And if you thought it was a bad bad thing
Can you tell me why all the kids have moved away?
All the factories moved away?
There are those that have often said
That the town began it's sinking long ago.
And only now begins to show.
Thomas Hull from his boathouse watched the waters roll away
As if for Israelites to walk into a better place
But Thomas knew that this was here to stay, and cried aloud
"What am I to do with all these pedal boats?"
And if you thought it was a bad bad thing
Can you tell me why all the kids have moved away?
All the factories moved away?
There are those that have often said
That the town began it's sinking long ago.
And only now begins to show.

An Unseasonably Warm Day
03:24
|
|||
An unseasonably warm day in the fall marked the start of the finish
And all of god's creatures were a'scurrying in unnatural circles
And those so inclined heaved a sigh and began to say
Lo and behold, you know all this could've been foretold!
We should've known!
We should've known!
An unseasonably warm week in the spring marked the end of the finish
And all of god's children were a'scurrying in unnatural circles
Some threw up their hands and ran and began to say
I'll say if I may, you deserve it if it ends this way
And you should've know
You should've known
And they're taking their kin and their kind far away from their dire predictions
Hoping once they've renounced their acquitted of crimes and unpleasant afflictions
And they should've known. They should've known
An unseasonable warm year in a few years from now was...beginning!
And all of god's children were alive and afraid and a'scurrying
Those who had fled came on down from their hills and caves
There were more still alove than they had ever hoped or prayed
And we should've known.
We should've known
And they're taking their kin and their kind far away from their dire predictions
Hoping once they've renounced their acquitted of crimes and unpleasant afflictions
And I....
I think I'll insert, if I may, that your 'duty' is your dereliction
Hoping once they've renounced their acquitted of crimes and unpleasant afflictions
And you should've known. You.......
should have known.

When the Summer Came...
04:04
|
|||
When the summer came
I opened the windows, packed all the boxes, kissed all the ladies
When the summer came
I was sick of the neighbors, shut off the 'lectric, headed for Austin
I stop to wonder at
The petrified trees and the meteor hole
I sleep outside a lot
Glean what I can and read ravenously
But if I were forced to choose
If I could go back and choose
if I could go back and choose
if I could go back
and choose...
When the winter came
I worked on the line crew, nibbled the garbage, slept in the basement
When the winter came
hands in my pockets, pissed off the bosses, function to function
All of this work we do
Funneled so narrowly into the mouths
Every so often I
Think about steal my manager's car
But if I were forced to choose
If I could go back and choose
And everyone has to choose
Everyone has.....
Everyone has.....
Everyone has.....
to choose...
I'd stay.

Our Father's Weapons
03:56
|
|||
When I run away again
I know that I will have fixed all of the glitches in my plan.
I'll knot my sheets into a rope
And wake my sister with the rations in our bag.
And in the forest all the kids will, lying still, lie in hiding for us.
And on my signal they will rise and join us.
And we will start to build
And we will all have big tree houses.
The brances grown around us
Will disguise us with the morning breaks.
And when there are no crumbs left
In the bottoms of our pouches
We will have to hunt and it will freak us out
But there you are:
We are carnivores.
And if we're gonna fight with our father's weapons.
We gotta always know what we're fighting for.
If ever as your leader I am tempted to betray you,
I pray that God will strike me down
Before I ever make my move.
And if we're gonna fight with our father's weapons.
We gotta always know what we're fighting for.
And when the grownups gather round
With lots of toys and chocolate milk
The little ones will start to cry
And we will send them back inside.
The grownups see our deep resolve
They threaten us, they pull out saws.
We start to climb from limb to limb
The motors whir, the teeth dig in.
But we will not be swayed.
We will not be swayed.
And up in the tree tops
The sun beckons us
to it.

All the food I like to eat
Tends to be vegetarian
But I ain't vegetarian
It's just the food I like to eat.
And when I meet a gentle man
You know I'm gonna marry him
I'm not utilitarian
It's just the people that I meet.
Every time I go to town
Boys keep kicking my dog around
Makes no difference he's a hound.
Them boys is just mean.
Makes no difference he's a hound,
Boys keep kicking my dog around
And I ain't gonna take it any more, any more.
So get on off of my porch
'Cause our Ma is getting restless.
And we don't need your data
Or your unhydrogenated oil.
And if we die from our lives,
Well that ain't unusual
And we righteously unrighteous
Will get on with a smile won't we now.
Get on off.
I have seen the pumpkin tree.
I know they're gonna envy me.
But they're not going to find it
no matter how hard they try.
I swear to you it speaks to me
and all my pups they fall asleep
There beneath the pumpkin tree
with all the birds and beasts.
So get on off of my porch
'Cause our Ma is getting restless.
And we don't need your data
Or your unhydrogenated oil.
And if we die from our lives,
Well that ain't unusual
And we righteously unrighteous
Will get on with a smile won't we now.
Get on off.

Anne H. Matheson
04:19
|
|||
Anne H. Matheson was 21 years old and still unwed.
At church she suffered coarse remarks
And forced a smile and promised mother, "soon."
Once her junior year at BYU Anne met a boy like her.
They ran into the hills, seen by stars made love
He saw her breasts, he saw her brains.
And so they told him, "You should be scared of her."
Her friends were unprepared.
She'd been a smart and energetic girl.
The note left no excuse,
And so they searched in vain the mountain side
For her corpse.
Everyone knows that such a girl is bound to make it.
Everyone knows that God himself will lead her to a better place.
And you should be scared of her.
Anne got on a bus and out of Utah as the sun came up.
She swore that ne'er again she'd disgrace her temple
Bye bye bye, and fuck you.
Everyone knows that such a girl is bound to make it.
Everyone knows that God himself will lead her to a better place.
And you should be scared of her.

Riversnakes
03:36
|
|||
Once our sons would walk the graveyard
And thanks to all his brothers' stories
Tim the youngest swore he'd seen an eye
In the grass
When our neighbors lost their boy
We saw how dark the river was
We lied and said down stream they might find
Riversnakes, the riversnakes
We'd go swimming, if not for the riversnakes, the riversnakes
When we were in the garden, they would swim.
Tim called in the frigid morning
To say that he'd been praying in secret,
We were sure he'd n'er come home again
We were sure - we were sure
Later, Tim took off his clothes
And dove into the rapid currents
And each time he submerged we thought
He n'er come up, he'd n'er come up.
He swam until his skin was blue
We didn't know what we should do
When he got out we all went back for lunch!
